So, for context, Blue's Clues got a reboot with a new host and new look and everything. I haven't seen any episodes yet, but I know they are just as good as Steve's and Joe's because Josh Dela Cruz is a fabulous host helped picked by Steve himself. Blue's voice actress also returned for the role, as well as a couple of others.

Well today, I log on to Twitter and I find Blue's Clues trending. And me, I LOVE Blue's Clues, ever since I was a kid, and even now as an adult. So, OF COURSE, I'm excited to see exactly why Blue's Clues is trending, I do have a special interest in it after all. So I click and then I see the below image:

And of course, I at first think, "Awww, this is adorable fanart!" because I've seen a lot of "Blue says Trans Rights!" kinds of artwork. But I scroll a little more and I find out THIS ISN'T FANART, IT'S OFFICIAL, LIKE, FROM THE REAL BLUE'S CLUES. IT'S FROM THE ACTUAL PEOPLE THAT MAKE BLUE'S CLUES.

You have NO idea just how happy seeing this makes me. They put this scene on the official Blue’s Clues YouTube account in one of their Official Videos. The video is their own take on a song featuring the alphabet; here's the full video if you are interested, the "P is full of pride" happens at timestamp 1:35.

The flags featured are as follows (starting from 11 o'clock): asexual, trans, lesbian, bisexual, nonbinary, genderfluid, intersex, and pansexual. The letter "P" is also in the colors of the inclusive rainbow flag that has black and brown added as well as the trans flag. I really feel like they chose a good selection of flags to represent the queer/LGBT community, a nice mix of common and uncommon identities. I also think the screencaps at 0:35 and 1:17 are really cool too. At 0:35, we see a big variety of disabled people plus a fat person and at 1:17 we see a girl in a hijab and a girl with vitiligo. I can really tell they took great care in adding these scenes and my instinct says they are some actual queer/LGBT people working on the new Blue's Clues show.

It just means so much for there to be a childrens' show that is unabashedly being an open ally and progressive. From my experience of it, they always have been from the very first episode, with Steve signing ASL here and there and them keeping a stricter hold on the licensing rights for Blue's Clues merch unless company's could prove the toys would be helpful and educational to children, even at the expense of not elevating their budget.

Blue's Clues gives me so many fuzzy, happy feelings, and now I have an even more of a reason to feel that way about it, because they are accepting and supportive of my identities and identities of marginalized people.

Now that PF is in it's read-only mode, I will be cross-posting all my relevant public posts from both Always_Sundae and Lavender-Sprinkles on PF to this journal. I will be either backdating the posts or I will say in the "above the fold" area of the text when the post was originally posted and to which blog. All posts will have minimal to no edits made to them, so they will be more or less the same as the originals on PF. I am not sure yet if PF specific posts will be moved here (like my "A Guide to Reviving Communities" post), but if any of y'all really want those posts as well, go ahead and pipe up!

Also, feel free to comment on ANY of the posts if you wish, there's never any time limit to our posts and we're still happy to have convos about them. Some posts were made by Sundae, some were made by me, Lav, but it doesn't matter too much to who you refer to in any posts' usage of "I". We'll answer just the same either way, pretty fluidly, no problems.

Mel and I started watching Twilight saga as of late and I kind of wanted to make a post sharing my thoughts on it so far.

We decided to watch Twilight mainly because it was really big for a while and we kind of wanted to check it off of our "inundated with pop culture" list, if that makes sense. Basically, we wanted to be able to say we had seen it and also maybe get a clue as to what the hype was about. So far, we've watched the first two movies and we intend to get through them all eventually.

Going in, all I knew about the saga was that:

  1. It was really popular with "basic teen girls" back in the 2000s
  2. Some cynical edgelords hated it for being an over-hyped straight romance that was everywhere without ever watching/reading it
  3. Some people wrote point-by-point descriptions of Edward fitting the epitome of the "abusive boyfriend" and that Twilight promoted rape culture and/or bad relationship ideals
  4. It was kind of bland and/or boring, like a saltine cracker, and is a waste of time to indulge in
  5. There was ridiculous choices made by the author to depict certain tropes that are somehow worthy of mocking and jokes
  6. The actors, particularly Robert Patterson, hated the movies and it's evident by their acting in the movies

But like, after watching the first two movies, it's really not as bad as I expected it to be based on what I knew beforehand, and I can't quite figure out why people dunk on it to the point of making people who do like it feel horrible and ashamed.

Twilight and its characters definitely have their issues (and I've heard S. Meyer is a bit yikes, which doesn't surprise me), but honestly, I'm kind of enjoying the movies. There may be better franchises out there that are more deserving of the popularity Twilight ended up getting, and I know for a little while it was annoyingly pervasive, but I think there are quite a few things worth gleaning from the story. At the very least, it can give you something to think about, particularly what it says about our society that it was so loved by teen girls and so hated by many others.

In conclusion, just let people like Twilight or other "cringy" things, in spite of their flaws or even because of them, as long as they think critically and stay aware of any legitimate problems with the media, such as racism, sexism, ableism, etc.

My QPP and I got to watch Coco for the first time the other day.

I was pretty indifferent about watching the movie, since I didn’t see much about Coco online when it first came out except that it was based around Day of the Dead and it was a nice tribute to Mexican culture. But Mel wanted to give it a try and I was like, sure, why not?

I already knew about the “big reveal” because I used to play a Disney mobile game that had a Coco event with some vague out-of-context spoilers in it, but other than that, I had no idea how the movie would play out. Mel knew even less than I did.

The movie starts out with the kid narrating his life story which is pretty cute and wholesome. He’s a really good boy to his Mamá Coco without any hint of feeling bothered about talking to her with her Alzheimer's, so that’s a good start.

Abuelita being the overcontrolling and misguided but still loving family member instead of the dad is an interesting departure from Disney’s usual handling of the trope. It always hurts when they destroy a prized possession/forbid the main character from doing what they love most, though. I cringe every time I see that part of the trope play out.

All in all, it was a really pleasant watch and I’m glad I got to see it. It’s not the most amazing Pixar movie in the world, but I’m really glad something a bit different than Disney’s usual European/Americanized stories got made.

Me and my QPP finished The Good Place the other day!
We couldn’t find the whole series to stream anywhere and, even if we hadn’t seen the whole thing yet, we already knew we loved the show, so I just went ahead and pre-ordered the complete series on Blu-ray. It came last week and we binged it. Just watched episodes 6-12 at a time and finished the whole series in about 5-6 days flat.

I have to say, I loved every bit of the show and I’m so glad I got to finish the whole thing with her. It’s hard even now to pull in all my thoughts on what I loved and write them out in-depth, but I can say a few things.

First of all, all the characters were wonderful. I think this is one of the few shows where I fell in love with all the characters equally. It was amazing seeing them grow, get better, and gain more knowledge. I also loved how they all genuinely tried their best even if it seemed fruitless sometimes. I adored that by the end, they had gotten really close and devoted to each other like they were matching set. I really want them to just be in a big happy polyamorous relationship with each other with platonic, romantic, and ambiguous attraction for each other. I have to go see if there are any fanfics to that end.

Also, the twists in this show! Seeing the “This is the bad place!” reveal for the first time had us blown away. It was like the biggest plot twist since “Luke, I am your father!”. Rewatching the first two seasons again with the foreknowledge of the twist was still pretty cool. Nothing will be quite like the first runaround though.

Also the ending 😭! I didn’t start crying until Chidi said he was ready to go and then I lost it seeing Eleanor so scared and upset. It was also really nice to see Tahani get closure with her parents. Also, seeing a wrap up of the arc with Mindy was nice too although yikes with what happened to Derek. And it was cool seeing that when they went through the arch, they became “the little voice in people’s heads”; that was a nice final touch.

All in all, a really, really good show, I highly recommend it. It’s definitely made it into my top 5, that’s for sure.
Also, I’m serious about that polyamory network with the main cast, if I can’t find any good fics, I will have to make one myself.

All dogs are inherently good and any aggression isn’t their fault. Toy breeds often have a Napoleon complex and either will be spoiled whiny babies or just grumpy all the time.

Not all cats are evil, but all cats are chaotic bastards UNLESS they are love muffins. Some can be both.

All bunnies have potential for evil and they let you know this by their particularness.

All ferrets are wigglers from the moment they are born.

Rodents are much more affectionate than most people think they are.

Reptiles aren’t slimy and are actually pretty sensitive, especially snakes.

Big farm animals just really want to be baby. Horses need therapists or glasses, probably both.

Fish just exist, but many are smart.

Birds are always LOUD and you will figure that out at odd times.

Bugs are for interesting people, but those people are always adamant defenders of them. Sometimes those people make you realize bugs are actually pretty cool.

Snails are neat, so are turtles.

Pet rocks are for everyone, even for people who kill plants.

Disclaimer: This isn’t actually a serious post, but are just silly reflections.

An outdoor wood cabinet with the appearance of a house. There's food inside which can be seen through the clear door. Text at the top of the cabinet reads "Birdie's Blessing Box"   An outdoor wood cabinet with food inside which can be seen through the clear window. There's a sign next to the cabinet that says "Take what you want. Give what you can.". A second sign below that says "Free food"

A year ago, I made a post talking about my love for Little Library Boxes that you often see in parks and other places. Well, now I have discovered a new Little Box movement to love and support, Little Free Pantries.

Isn't this just a really cool idea? Now obviously, it's not a replacement for actual food pantries, but it can be a small nice project for you and your community to work on, like a community garden or the fore-mentioned Library Boxes.
I really like the idea of this because the box can be available 24/7, allowing people to get/give items even outside the normal hours a food pantry might be open and also since they are more likely to be in neighborhoods and parks, may be easier to get to by walking instead of by driving since food pantries are commonly within city limits or downtown areas and not everyone has cars.
The Pantry Box is based on the good faith system so obviously, you want to be sure the placement of the box is in a safe, low vandalism area, but the lack of people monitoring the box can be also be a positive allowing those who have social anxiety, are underage, or are ashamed to still get something. I think also those in highly restrictive abusive situations may be able to get to a Pantry Box a lot easier than a regular food pantry, but that might just be my thinking.

There is actually a website full of helpful info, a photo gallery, and even a guide to creating your own box from wood if you are interested. You can check it out at LittleFreePantry.org

Heads up! Next year is a Leap Year so we will have 366 days instead of 365. February 29th falls on a Saturday this Leap Year

Here's some random Leap Year facts that I found:

• It takes the Earth a little more than 365 days or approx. 365.242189 (aka 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes, and 45 seconds) to orbit the Sun.

• In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar was the first person to create the rule of having a Leap Day every four years so that the Spring Equinox would fall appropriately within March 19th-21st.

• In 1582 A.D., Pope Gregory XIII added an additional rule that Leap Years only occur in century years that are divisible by 100 and 400. (For example, 1600, 2000, and 2400 have Leap Years, but the years 1700, 1800, and 1900 did not.) This additional rule makes up for the 11-minute discrepancy that existed with the Julian Calendar system.

• If we didn't use the Leap Year rule, our calendar would be off by 24 days after 100 years.

• Babies who are born on February 29th are called "Leaplings" or "Leapers". It's supposed that only about 0.7% of the population are born on Leap Day. There is only about a 1 and 1,500 change of being born on Leap Day.

• Important events that happened during Leap Years are: the Titanic sinking (1912), Benjamin Franklink discovering electricity (1752), and gold being discovered in Califonia (1848).

• Rumored to have started in 5th century Ireland, there is a tradition that a woman may propose on Leap Day. In 1288 A.D., the tradition continued when Queen Marget of Scotland said on Leap Day, a woman may propose to any man she fancies and the man must accept. If he doesn't, the penalty is either a kiss, a silk dress, or 12 pairs of gloves.

• Many people over in Greece see marrying within a Leap Year as bad luck so 1 in 5 couples avoid marrying during a Leap Year.

• Karin Henriksen of Norway gave birth to three children on consecutive February 29ths – a daughter in 1960 and two sons in 1964 and 1968.

• Since February 29th 2020 lands on a Saturday, that makes March 13th Friday the 13th. If there was no February 29th next year, the next Friday the 13th would actually be in June.

And that's about all the facts I could scrounge up, I hope you enjoyed them!

Do you have any interesting stories about Leap Day?

This post is inspired by the fact that I was visited by the visceral taste of foods gone by after I saw my partner doodling popsicles and particularly, a push pop with the paper wrapper.

1. Blue's Clues Gummies

a box of Kellogg's Blue's Clues Fruit Flavored Snacks
Blue's Clues gummies were these creamy-style fruit gummies. The most nostalgic thing I remember about them was the opaque color to them. They looked like matte finish nail polish and tasted like creme fruit candies.
2. Blue's Clues Ice Cream
a carton of Blue Bunny brand Blue's Clues ice cream in the foreground, with a bowlful of the blue vanilla with blue sugar cookie pawprints in the foreground
Blue's Clues ice cream was a flavor created by Blue Bunny back in 2003 and was discontinued pretty soon after. It was a vanilla ice cream with a blue color to it and the pawprint treats in the ice cream were actually sugar cookies. I remember eating the ice cream and loving the taste and texture of the cookies even though I had no idea that the cookies were in fact, cookies. I used to think they were giant sprinkles similar to the round flat confetti ones and was always disappointed that regular sprinkles didn't taste as good as the "sprinkles" in my favorite ice cream. The ice cream by itself was really good too, it was vanilla, but it tasted like, well... vaguely like the happiness that Blue's Clues gave me. It was very creamy, it didn't taste artificial despite the high amounts of blue food coloring, and it was very sweet and comforting.
3. Blue's Clues Applesauce
a 6-pack of Blue's Clues Mott's berry-flavored apple sauce; the apple sauce has a blue color
Blue's Clues applesauce, the bluest tasting applesauce you will ever love eating. Technically, it also had berries mashed into it like blueberry and raspberry and such (as you can see on the package), but like tto me as a 5-year-old kid, it was just blue applesauce, I couldn't even distinguish the fact that they were other flavors that are in fact not apple and not blue. As an adult, I find the mere fact that I ate blue applesauce as a child appalling, but at the same time, I'm nostalgic for it and would eat it in a heartbeat if it existed again ignoring my repulsion.
